Charles Glover cigarette case

This silver cigarette box belonged to Charles Glover, a businessman, public benefactor, book collector and three times Mayor of Adelaide.

Glover began a career on the Adelaide City Council in 1906. He was an alderman from 1909 to 1917, then mayor. In 1919 he became Adelaide’s first Lord Mayor, a position he also held in 1923-25 and 1930-33.

The position of Lord Mayor is a special status granted by the monarch to mayors of major cities. In Australia this is primarily the capital cities of Australian states and territories.
