The 1931 Beef Riot was sparked by the replacement of beef with mutton in rations during the Great Depression. Over 1000 unemployed men and their families marched from Port Adelaide to the Treasury Building on King William Street. They were charged by police, and there were many arrests and injuries in the resulting violence.
