On Wednesday 22 April the first Parliament of South Australia met in the Council Chambers on North Terrace. A guard of honour assembled and the Governor, Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell, arrived on horseback, marked by the firing of a salute. The event drew a cheering crowd of over a thousand people.
